Denzel McKenzie is an up and coming Jazz trombonist and composer from Springfield Gardens. He received his Master’s in Jazz Trombone, Vocal Performance and Composition from Queens College, CUNY. He has been playing trombone for about 17 years and has studied with some of the greatest jazz trombonist of our time such Jason Jackson and Luis Bonilla.
As a composer, Denzel began to harness his skill for writing in his undergraduate jazz program at City College of New York. It was there where he learned to write for big band and continued to progress this skill into the Master’s program at Queens College.
Although Denzel has his Master’s and Bachelors in performance, teaching has always come second nature to him. He works privately with students and also through many programs varying from York College Summer Jazz Program all the way to Sport and Arts in the Schools Foundation where he is Music Specialist.
As a performer he has lead his own trio at the Tsion Café in Harlem. He has performed as a side man for many other artists around the city and throughout Queens. Denzel was the lead trombonist for the York College blue notes and then the York College Big Band. Denzel has played at the last 5 CUNY Jazz Festivals with City college big band, Queens College Jazz Vocal Choir and his own ensembles. Denzel McKenzie plans to lead his own Quintet later in 2016 and release an album of all original music.
